Each year 8 people are nominated for their contribution to Australian society. These young people have been working with their communities to help homelessness, mental disease, domestic violence, health issues and a variety of social issues all communities around Australia face. The nominees have been recognised for their integrity, enthusiasm and idealism.
The winners are Lucas Patchett and Nic Marchesi who developed a mobile laundry service for homeless people. The two young men were trying to come up with ideas to encourage their schoolmates to give volunteering a go. Their idea sounded great, so they pitched it to a laundromat supplier, who donated machines. after a little experimenting, they had outfitted a van, and from then donations came pouring in. Lucas and Nic now have 5 vans across Australia and 300 Orange Sky volunteers doing laundry.
