‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness
Synopsis: ‘The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.
But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…
This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.
It wants the truth.’
Patrick Ness may have been the author of this novel but the original concept was dreamt up by Siobhan Dowd. Ms Dowd had the characters, the premise and the beginning of a story, when her time ran out. Mr Ness was asked to complete the story.
‘A Monster Calls’ has won a swag of awards and deservedly so. It is an amazing story. It is heartbreaking and brought me to tears many times. By the end I was sobbing. A very moving story of a young boy coping with; a mother who has cancer, pity from the other students at school, a bully at school, a father in another country with another family and a Grandmother looking after him. The problems seem endless. The author then adds the monster to the mix.
This is a beautiful, gripping story and if you have the chance, read the illustrated version because the pictures speak a thousand words.
