Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls By Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo

Synopsis:
‘What if the princess didn't marry Prince Charming but instead went on to be an astronaut? What if the jealous step sisters were supportive and kind? And what if the queen was the one really in charge of the kingdom?

Illustrated by sixty female artists from every corner of the globe, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls introduces us to one hundred remarkable women and their extraordinary lives, from Ada Lovelace to Malala, Elizabeth I to Serena Williams. Empowering, moving and inspirational, these are true fairy tales for heroines who definitely don't need rescuing.’

An empowering book for all walks and ages about inspirational women. While the title may suggest female bias, there is no reason boys cannot read about amazing women and their achievements. Especially as most of these women were told they could not do something by men.
This book will encourage girls and boys to aim high and that no obstacle is insurmountable.

'Mao's Last Dancer' by Li Cunxin

Synopsis:
'The true story of a poor Chinese peasant boy who, plucked unsuspectingly at the age of ten from millions of others across the land to be trained as a ballet dancer, turned the situation to his advantage to become one of the world's greatest ballet stars. Simply told, with charm, humour and compassion and at times, great drama. His childhood, despite the terrible hardships, is drawn with love and affection and contrasts starkly with the seven lonely years of gruelling training at the Peking Dance Academy. At the age of l8, Li performs at the Houston Ballet school in the US, which leads to his dramatic defection.'

Be inspired by the nominations for Young Australian of the Year.
Each year 8 people are nominated for their contribution to Australian society. These young people have been working with their communities to help homelessness, mental disease, domestic violence, health issues and a variety of social issues all communities around Australia face. The nominees have been recognised for their integrity, enthusiasm and idealism.

The winners are Lucas Patchett and Nic Marchesi who developed a mobile laundry service for homeless people. The two young men were trying to come up with ideas to encourage their  schoolmates to give volunteering a go. Their idea sounded great, so they pitched it to a laundromat supplier, who donated machines. after a little experimenting, they had outfitted a van, and from then donations came pouring in. Lucas and Nic now have 5 vans across Australia and 300 Orange Sky volunteers doing laundry.

For more information on the nominees and their worthwhile pursuits read the article '9 Young Australians Who are Killing it Right Now'.
