'Partials' by Dan Wells
For fans of science fiction, fantasy and dystopian novels this series is for you.

A fun filled, exciting novel. The story centres around a strong female character and takes the reader on a wild ride. Science plays a large part in this novel, but does not detract from the story in any way. In fact the scientific explanations only add to the suspense and mystery of the story.
Looking for something captivating to read, don’t pass this series.

Synopsis:
‘Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. But sixteen-year-old Kira is determined to find a solution. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that that the survival of both humans and Partials rests in her attempts to answer questions about the war's origin that she never knew to ask.
Playing on our curiosity of and fascination with the complete collapse of civilization, Partials is, at its heart, a story of survival, one that explores the individual narratives and complex relationships of those left behind, both humans and Partials alike—and of the way in which the concept of what is right and wrong in this world is greatly dependent on one's own point of view.’

On Friday June 5, two teams of four students from year 7 & 8 participated in the Readers Cup Regional Competition. Our Year 7 team were the winners of this prestigious event.

The Readers Cup requires a team of four students to read a set of six books over an eight week period. Teams then compete with other each other at a friendly competition at school. The winning teams go on to represent St Stephen’s in Cairns. The competition challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading.
Students started reading these books during the Easter holidays and during the last term met once a week to discuss the books, ask each other questions and swap the novels. The last week before the event these students gave up every lunch time to prepare for the competition.

The winning team are now preparing for the State Finals held in Brisbane in September. This requires the team to read a set of 5 new novels. The team will also be attending the Writers Festival when visiting Brisbane.

'Ash Road' by Ivan Southall

Synopsis: 'It's hot, dry and sweaty on Ash Road, where Graham, Harry and Wallace are getting their first taste of independence, camping, just the three of them. When they accidentally light a bushfire no one would have guessed how far it would go. All along Ash Road fathers go off to fight the fires and mothers help in the first aid centres. The children of Prescott are left alone, presumed safe, until it's the fire itself that reaches them. These children are forced to face a major crisis with only each other and the two old men left in their care.
Ivan Southall was the first Australian author to receive the Carnergie Medal, and was awarded the Australian Children's Book Council Book of the Year on three occasions. An icon of Australian children's literature, he wrote over sixty books in his lifetime and has been published in twenty-three different countries. He died in 2008.’

I have read this book many times over the years and I am never disappointed. Ivan Southall is very descriptive in his writing, so much so that you can almost hear the noise of the fire and smell the smoke wafting closer and closer until you cannot breathe.
This is an exciting tale of early Australia. While the novel may have been written a while ago, the story has not dated. Anyone who has experienced an Australian bush fire will tell you that Mr Southall’s story is still pertinent in today's world.
A beautifully crafted descriptive novel. I highly recommend  this book.
